Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS)

Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS)is a statutory organization established by an Act of Parliament of June 1983 and became operational in 1989. The UNBS Headquarters is located in Nakawa Industrial Area with regional offices in Lira, Mbale, Jinja, Kampala and Mbarara.



The mission of UNBS is to enhance national development through the application of standards in trade, industry and consumer protection. The vision of UNBS is To be a leading institution of international repute in the provision of standardization services.

UNBS is a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and also a member of the Africa Regional Organization for Standardization (ARSO). UNBS is the National contact point for FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission, which is responsible for the Worldwide Food Standards Programme. It is also the enquiry point responsible for World Trade Organization (WTO) with respect to the Agreements on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) and on Application of Sanitary and Phyto-sanitary Measures (SPS).

UNBS in conjunction with the Kenya and Tanzania Bureaux of Standards is involved in the elaboration of East African harmonized standards within the framework of East African Co-operation.



Objectives of UNBS

The main objectives of UNBS are to formulate and promote the use of National standards and to develop quality control and quality assurance systems that will enhance consumer protection, public health and safety, industrial and commercial development and international trade, among others.

UNBS in Brief

UNBS is mandated to develop and promote standardisation, quality assurance, laboratory testing and metrology.

The role of UNBS
  • Formulation and promotion of the use of standards;
  • Enforcing standards in protection of the public health and safety and the environment against dangerous, counterfeit and substandard products;
  • Ensuring fairness in trade and precision in industry through reliable measurement systems;
  • Strengthening Uganda 's economy by enhancing competitiveness of local industries and promotion of quality exports through standardisation, quality assurance, testing and metrology.

UNBS Activities

In pursuit of its mandate, UNBS carries out the following activities:
  • Standards development;
  • Assisting industrialists/manufacturers and producers to improve on the quality of their products and services;
  • Providing efficient information services on all matters related to standards, quality assurance, metrology and testing ;
  • Market surveillance to rid the market of dangerous, counterfeit and substandard products;
  • Verifying accuracy of weighing and measuring instruments used by traders and consumers in commercial transactions and calibrating measuring and testing equipment used in industry;
  • Carrying out shipment inspection and conformity assessment for exports, imports and tender supplies;
  • Assisting the private sector, procurement agents, government and the general public in conformity assessment of goods by testing, measuring and inspection against standards and or specifications;
  • Carrying out factory inspection to evaluate conformance with standards; and
  • Liaison with national, regional and international standardisation and related bodies.
