Compliance with Standards and Technical Regulations

Compliance with standards and technical regulations can take many forms. Increasingly however, due to the increase in international trade, independent attestation of compliance is required by both authorities and purchasers. Suppliers therefore have to be able to provide the purchaser and the authorities in target markets with acceptable inspection or test reports or certification - for the products or services as well as their management and manufacturing systems.

The organizations that can provide such test reports and certification are collectively called the national quality infrastructure. These would include metrology, inspection, testing, certification and accreditation or any combination relevant to the product and purchaser requirements. Of major importance is to ensure that test reports and certificates from institutions of the national quality infrastructure are internationally recognized. The slogan is "Tested once, certified once, and accepted everywhere". This is not yet a reality, but the world is slowly working towards it.
